Our tribute goes to all our employees who adhered to the protocols directed to them for the safety of COVID 19.
We are Sri Lanka’s first and only COVID -19 safety certified seafood processing and export company certified by SLSI as “COVID-19 Controlled Environment”. It is indeed a “PROUD” moment for all of us at Global Sea Foods [Pvt] Ltd Sri Lanka.
Global Sea Food Ltd. (GSF) was presented with the prestigious National Business Excellence Silver Award on 13 December conducted by the National Chamber of Commerce Sri Lanka. Global Sea Foods has been an award recipient for Excellence since 2009.
This award is the third accomplishment for the company who received similar awards at the Presidential Exports Award 2019 and the NCE Award 2019 which is indeed a remarkable performance by the company.
Over the past few years we have grown our business with more innovations to fulfill the increasing demands in the sea food industry. We have strengthened our business partnerships, increasing our processing capacity and developing a compelling product portfolio.
“With a strong growth strategy in all the channels we operate, we are the first company in Sri Lanka to process wakame seaweed to the Japanese market and also embarked into developing and introducing a sustainable fish and seafood packaging solution which will replace styrofoam which is extremely harmful to the environment by the introduction of a new biodegradable packaging material. GSF is committed to sustainability, sourcing and processing seafood responsibly to protect the natural resources whilst delivering freshness and food safety to the consumer. GSF commitment to the marine eco system is further demonstrated by initiating the Sri Lankan Fisheries Improvement Program, targeting MSC certification,” said Global Seafoods CEO Sampath Padmawansa.

- New product added to Sri Lanka’s export basket
The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka signed a supplementary Agreement with Global Seafoods Ltd. on 17 May, to process Wakame seaweed for export in their existing factory complex. The Agreement was signed on behalf of the BOI by Board Chairman Mangala Yapa and by Global Seafoods Director Radhika Subasinghe, and Chandani Weragala signed on behalf of Nexia Corporate Consultants, secretaries to the company. Also present was Group General Manager Parakrama Weerasinghe.
Parakrama Weerasinghe stated: “Wakame is a seaweed found in the Pacific Ocean, which we will be importing from Japan, processing, and re-exporting to Japan. It is used for Japanese cuisine, especially soups, and some other dishes. It is the first time that this product is processed in Sri Lanka so Global Seafoods is very proud to be a pioneer in this field.”
He added: “Global Seafoods Ltd. started its operation in 1999 and is engaged in the processing and exporting of frozen and fresh fish globally. Our main markets are Europe and the USA. We also process sashimi-grade salmon products in Sri Lanka to be exported to Japan. That also is a new product for Sri Lanka’s export basket, which we introduced about 2 years ago. Earlier this particular salmon processing was done in Vietnam, but we were able to persuade our buyers to process it from Sri Lanka.
“We can therefore proudly say that Global Seafoods has introduced new fisheries and seafood products to Sri Lanka’s export basket.”
Global Seafoods is a company that employs more than 250 staff and supports the local fishing industry by purchasing the bulk of its raw material from local fishermen.

Global Sea Foods (Pvt) Ltd. (Fresh and Frozen) – a leading seafood processing company based in Sri Lanka – has successfully undergone Friend of the Sea renewal audit for yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and obtained Friend of the Sea second certification for swordfish (Xiphias gladius). Products from the Sri Lankan deep set short line vessels operating in the Indian Ocean (FAO area 57) can now carry the Friend of the Sea sustainability seal of approval.
Yellowfin tuna and swordfish are considered to be not overexploited in the Indian Ocean, according to the latest stock assessments. Fleets, operating from 300-400 Km away from sea shore, affect no protected areas and the fishing method is selective and not impacting the seabed. The company is also approved Dolphin-Safe by the Earth Island Institute.
Global Sea Foods has a traceability system in place and it can demonstrate the products originate only from the Friend of the Sea approved fleets. Both GPS and radio transmission are available onboard. The fishery operates in full compliance with the national legislation.
“We care about the health of the marine habitat and that is why we rely on Friend of the Sea to prove the sustainable origin of our products”, remarks Mr. Prabhash Subasinghe, Managing Director of Global Sea Foods. “Friend of the Sea eco-label is a great confirmation of the validity of our engagement”.
